The Kansas Paralegal Association is hosting a CLE Lunch-N-Learn through Zoom on Wednesday, March 5, 2025, from 12:00pm to 1:00pm CST.

TOPIC OVERVIEW: Our guest speaker, Christopher R. Drahozal with University of Kansas School of Law will be presenting on the topic: What is Arbitration? Legal Principles and Common Misperceptions.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES/OVERVIEW:

Arbitration (private judging) is an important alternative means of resolving disputes between businesses and between businesses and consumers or employees. The presentation will provide an overview of the legal principles governing arbitration in the United States and of empirical evidence on the practice of arbitration, particularly in consumer disputes. It will (1) compare arbitration and litigation;    (2) discuss legal issues raised in determining the enforceability of arbitration agreements and awards; and (3) challenge some common misperceptions about the use of arbitration to resolve disputes between businesses and consumers or employees.

SPEAKER BIO:

Christopher R. Drahozal is the John M. Rounds Professor of Law at the University of Kansas School of Law. He was an Associate Reporter for the Restatement of the U.S. Law on International Commercial and Investor-State Arbitration, and served as a Special Advisor to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau on the use of arbitration clauses in consumer financial services contracts. Prior to teaching, Professor Drahozal was in private law practice in Washington, D.C., and served as a law clerk for the Iran-U.S. Claims Tribunal, the United States Supreme Court, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit.
