The Kansas Paralegal Association Membership Year is July 1st - June 30th.

Types of Membership:

  • Voting* – available to individuals qualified through education, training or work experience, who is employed or retained by a lawyer, law office, governmental agency or other entity in a capacity or function which involves the performance under the ultimate direction or supervision of an attorney, or specifically delegated, substantive legal work, which work, for the most part, requires a sufficient knowledge of legal concepts that, absent such assistant, the attorney would perform the task.  A voting member shall possess at least ONE of the following qualifications:
    1. A post-secondary degree in the paralegal field and is employed or retained as a paralegal; or
    2. A baccalaureate or associate degree in a field other than paralegal and one (1) year of paralegal experience and is employed or retained as a paralegal; or
    3. A paralegal certificate with experience as a paralegal, for a combined total of three (3) years and is employed or retained as a paralegal; or
    4. Three (3) years of legal experience as a paralegal and is employed or retained as a paralegal; or
    5. Voting membership status as of 6/30/89 and currently employed or retained as a paralegal.
  • Affiliate* – available to an individual qualified as a paralegal through education, training, or work experience, who is not currently employed as a paralegal by a lawyer, law office, governmental agency, or any other entity, and as such, does not fall into the voting membership category.
  • Student – available to an individual enrolled in a formal course of study leading to a position as a paralegal.
  • Educator – available to full-time instructors and program coordinators of paralegal/legal assistant educational programs.
  • Retired – available to an individual who has retired from a paralegal career.
  • Military - Military membership is open to paralegals currently serving on Active Duty in the armed forces of the United States no matter where they are stationed.  Military members will be entitled to the same benefits and voting rights of a Voting member, so long as they meet the Voting member requirements and qualifications.
  • Qualified Fellowship - This category is not a membership with the KPA but is a fellowship granting the recipient limited access to KPA membership benefits.  To qualify, Applicant must have been provided a certificate and/or discount code from the KPA.  Recent graduates of a paralegal program may have been provided this information on behalf of KPA by their school. Qualified Fellowship Recipients will be granted complimentary access to a number of KPA membership benefits including newsletters and email updates, job registry, membership directory, KPA membership event rates, and many other benefits.

All applications received after April 1st will be processed for the upcoming membership year,
with limited KPA membership benefits available for the interim.

National Affiliation:  KPA is a member association of the National Federation of Paralegal Associations, Inc. (NFPA).  By virtue of joining the KPA, you are a member of the NFPA and $35 of your dues ($25 for a student membership) is forwarded to the NFPA for your membership in the NFPA, of which, a portion pays for your subscription to the National Paralegal Reporter.

NFPA dues are not deductible as charitable contributions for income tax purposes.  However, expenses may be deductible under business expenses, subject to restrictions imposed as a result of association lobbying activities.  NFPA estimates that the nondeductible portion of your NPFA dues is 9% of the $35.
