This presentation will touch on the tendencies—good and bad—displayed by many writers, best practices in legal writing, and common pitfalls that even the best writers make. Discussion points include: organization, writing for your audience, avoiding legalese, and frequent grammatical mistakes. Whether you’re writing a one-paragraph email or a letter, this presentation aims to make you the best writer you can be!

Kate Duncan Butler is a deputy disciplinary administrator at the Kansas Office of the Disciplinary Administrator. Her previous experiences include private practice, working at the Kansas Court of Appeals, and serving as the appellate prosecutor at the Douglas County District Attorney's Office. Lest you doubt her writing bona fides, she has authored more than 100 appellate briefs in her career. She is also a former English teacher, a voracious reader, and generally, an incorrigible nerd.
