The Kansas Paralegal Association is hosting a CLE webinar through Zoom on Thursday, October 21, 2021 from 12pm to 1pm over updates over the victim rights law in Kansas.
TOPIC OVERVIEW: Our guest speaker, Michelle McCormick, Director of the Victim Services Division at the Kansas Attorney General’s Office, will be speaking about the different updates and overview of the victim rights laws in Kansas.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
• Participants will gain an understanding of the history of victim rights in the Kansas legal system and will learn how this may connect to their current work.
• Participants will become familiar with the Kansas Victim Bill of Rights and understand how it is applied.
• Participants will learn about the resources for victims of crime available in Kansas and better know how to access these resources for information and referral.
SPEAKER BIO:
Michelle McCormick, LMSW is the Director of Victim Services and Victim Rights coordinator for the Kansas Attorney General’s office. Prior to this, she was the Program Director at the YWCA Northeast Kansas Center for Safety and Empowerment, where victims of domestic violence, sexual violence, and human trafficking are served. Michelle has been an advocate in this field for over 20 years. In addition to her years as an advocate at the YWCA, she previously worked for the Kansas Attorney General’s office from 2009-2016 to develop a certification program for Batterer Intervention Programs (BIP’s). In this role, Michelle assisted in drafting laws and regulations which strengthened the response to domestic violence offenders in Kansas. Michelle has provided professional training to thousands of professionals and community members on the topics of crime victim rights, domestic violence, batterer intervention, human trafficking, sexual harassment, the neurobiology of trauma, and trauma-informed services. Her professional speaking accomplishments include presenting a “Ted Talk” at the TedX Topeka Women’s conference, as well as presenting at national conferences. Michelle has served on the board of Jana’s Campaign and Florence Crittenton, is alumni of “Topeka’s Top 20 Under 40”, and is a graduate of the Leadership Greater Topeka program. Michelle has a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Emporia State University and a master’s degree in social work from the University of Kansas.
