The Kansas Paralegal Association is hosting a CLE webinar through Zoom on Thursday, January 14th, 2021 from 12pm to 1pm over the Dred Scott case.
TOPIC OVERVIEW: Our guest speaker, Kirk Nystrom with Nystrom Law Office, will provide attendees an overview of the Dred Scott case.
Imagine if you will, learning that the most famous slave in the county, was actually owned for years by a US Congressman, who ran for office as a dedicated abolitionist! This slave’s quest for freedom took him to the US Supreme Court, unsuccessfully. The ramifications of that case prompted a backwoods lawyer to successfully run for president. And the outcry from the case helped fuel the most violent conflict our country has ever known.
“The Curious Case of the Abolitionist Congressmen that Refused to Free His Slave, and Caused a Civil War”
Kirk Nystrom is a Topeka Attorney practicing law in the areas of Estate Planning and Probate. He received his Business Degree and Juris Doctor from Washburn University, and from UMKC his LL.M (a post doctorate law degree).
He is an entertaining speaker presenting seminars to lawyers, church, civic and professional groups. Kirk is one of the Presidents of the Lincoln Club, the Kansas Commander for the Sons of the Union Veterans of the Civil War, various Legal Societies and Christian Neighbor Center (a homeless shelter).
